And every time that thought creeps in, one name comes rushing back —Poppy. It certainly didn’t help that his name was Poppy, either.

Because Poppy wasn’t just any colt. He was the son of Shadowfax—one of the most legendary stallions to ever run along the riverbanks. Power, presence, dominance… Shadowfax carried it all. Naturally, expectations followed his son like a shadow that never lifted. And poor Poppy—he never quite matched the image others had already carved out for him.

Born to Posey and yes, he is a half-brother to Coyote, Poppy’s story could have been one of strength from the start. But the river had other plans.

As a yearling, before he had even found his footing in the world, Poppy endured something no young horse should ever face—a gunshot that tore into his right hip, we never did find out who the culprit was. The wound healed over time, but the mark never faded. It became part of him, etched into the right side of his body, a reminder that survival sometimes comes at a cost.

By the time he joined the bachelors as a two-year-old, Poppy was already fighting an uphill battle. The bachelor bands were unforgiving—filled with restless young stallions eager to prove themselves. Strength mattered. Dominance mattered. And Poppy… well, he wasn’t built for brutality.

He tried.

Time and again, he stepped forward to test himself, only to be pushed back by stronger, sharper rivals. Each clash seemed to reinforce his place near the bottom of the ladder. It was hard to watch—a stallion who refused to quit, even when the odds never tilted in his favor.

But Poppy had something many others didn’t.

He had Garrett.

The two had been bandmates in their younger days, forming a bond that ran deeper than rank or rivalry. Where Poppy lacked in physical dominance, he made up for in loyalty—and Garrett knew it. As the years passed, that bond became Poppy’s anchor.

Now, instead of chasing a crown that never quite fit, Poppy has carved out a different kind of legacy.

He stands beside Garrett—not as a rival, but as a trusted lieutenant. Together, they move like a united front, watching over Garrett’s young family and lending strength to Iroquois’ band. In their partnership, Poppy has found purpose… and perhaps something even stronger than power—belonging.

And who knows?

The river is always changing, always shaping new stories from old currents. Maybe one day, Poppy will gather a family of his own. Maybe his legacy won’t be measured against Shadowfax at all—but in the quiet strength he passes on, and the bonds he forges along the way.

Because out here, along the winding river, strength isn’t always the loudest force.

Sometimes… it’s the one that endures.

And this is As the River Flows.

📷 Photos by Simone Netherlands, Pam Buschbacher, Karen Carney

Out here, along the winding river, strength isn’t always the loudest force.
