Five fatalities of horses being hit by cars since April along Bush Highway, three of them within the past\u00a0week,\u00a0have prompted new safety measures to warn drivers.<\/p>\n

Several message boards were placed along the highway, cautioning drivers to \u201cslow down\u201d and to \u201cwatch for horses,” according to Tracy Ruth, communications-division manager for the\u00a0Maricopa County Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n

Other commitments include working with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to enforce speed limits and painting “watch for horses” signs on the asphalt.<\/p>\n

Simone Netherlands, president of Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, a non-profit organization that protects the\u00a0wild horses, said the Transportation Department\u00a0committed to short-term and long-term plans to improve safety along Bush Highway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really want to commend them for their fast action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
