Did you know SRWHMG has a facebook page dedicated to just our Wild Rescues?

The SRWHMG – Wild Rescues page was created to share the stories, photos, and progress of the Salt River wild horses who have needed rescue from the Tonto National Forest—horses who were suffering in plain sight and would not have survived without intervention.

While wild horses are incredibly resilient and often heal on their own, there are times when injuries or circumstances make survival impossible without help. In those moments, we step in. SRWHMG rescues horses with catastrophic injuries, abandoned foals, and elderly horses who can no longer fend for themselves.

Our rescued horses are not kept in stalls. Instead, they live in natural family band structures, allowing them to experience life as closely as possible to how they would in the wild.

Recently, we welcomed Wind, a Salt River stallion with an old, untreated broken leg—bringing our total number of rescues to 38. Their care is ongoing, complex, and costly, which is why we rely on sponsorships starting at just $10 a month.

Beyond the Salt River herd, we have also saved over 400 Alpine wild horses from kill-buyer auctions, placing them into safe sanctuary homes. We’ve provided permanent refuge for horses like Apache’s Band, Ness Yalia, and TY. In addition, we rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome domestic horses and other animals abandoned in the Tonto National Forest.
